๐Ÿ“ˆ Two in three American adults now play video games, and half of them is using a console ๐Ÿ’™

A few days ago, I bumped into an article with a pretty clear big picture for the video game industry in the US, according to the latest research from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA): the US video game industry brought in a record-breaking $43.4 billion in revenue in 2018, and roughly 65 percent of American adults โ€“ or more than 164 million people โ€“ play video games.

The 2019 Essential Facts about the Computer and Video Game Industry published by ESA is available here (it’s a .pdf – you can download it and read it later on), I have only underlined some of the numbers that seemed interesting to me below. People are always saying that the players are kids, but the numbers show, for example, that 39% of America players are 36+ years old adults, and another 40% are 18 to 35 years old.

  • 46% of gamers are female (34 average age)
  • 54% of gamers are male (32 average age)
  • 52% of gamers are college educated
  • 38, 37, and 33 are the average age of most frequent game purchasers for PC, smartphone, and console.
  • 57% of parents play games with their child at least weekly

The most common devices used for video game play among adult gamers:
– 60% Smartphone
– 52% Personal computer
– 49% Dedicated game console

Content is King, they say, and the numbers are following the saying. From a total of $43.4 billion in revenue in 2018, $35.8B was content, $5.1B hardware, and $2.4B accessories and VR.

How do you find these numbers? Don’t be a stranger, share your opinion in the comment section below, and make this blog a better one! Thanks.
