Game: Ratchet and Clank
Launch Date: April 12, 2016 (launch trailer)
Community: Starting page
Company: Insomniac
PlayStation: PS4 Pro Enhanced

Launched by Insomniac în 2016, Ratchet and Clank is marking the PlayStation 4 debut of PlayStation’s greatest heroes by telling the story of Ratchet, Clank and Captain Qwark as they battle to save the Solana Galaxy from the evil Chairman Drek, featuring a mix of platforming, action and role-playing gameplay elements presented in the third-person perspective.

With an hour of new cinematics (including footage from the film), Ratchet & Clank (PS4) takes a deeper look at the characters’ origin stories and modernizes the original gameplay. Explore the galaxy in a game that features new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new bosses, all-new Clank gameplay, all-new flight sequences, and much more — with completely new visuals built to demonstrate the power of the PS4!

The quote is from this month’s article on PlayStation’s blog about the games the PlayStation Plus members can play for free, as long as they have a PS Plus subscription active. Same article is mentioning Ratchet and Clank as second in March’s line-up, after Bloodborne.

Somehow, I agree, but it’s not necessarily fair, because I’m subjectively judging on its audience’s potential maturity level. This is also the reason why I don’t play Fortnight, for example – it seems like a toy for small kids (and comparing with Tom Clancy’s Wildlands we can all agree on this one), but, in the end, I think (sometimes?) I might take myself too seriously. 😀

Multiple sources of fun and different ways to teach your users how to play your game seems to be better hooks for new users than a story hard to understand and a gameplay difficult to manage even at the begining (remember the brutal giant wolf from Bloodborne?). With this in mind, please see the start of the game as I played it a couple of days ago, on a first timer‘s journey.

Now, you’ve seen what I have done for 20 minutes or so, smashing almost anything available on the map with an axe and throwing balls of fire into frogs and space robots during the training mission as a cadet. Cadet, sir! 😂

Sir, yes, sir! Let’s see what this game has to offer, sir! 😂

➡ The LOOKS (rating 7/10)

I’ve played it in 1080p, and is looking good and shiny.

Digging for more data about it, I have found out that Ratchet and Clank is looking better than ever, PlayStation Pro owners being able to take advantage of their 4k TV sets with higher-resolution gameplay and HDR (if supported), as well as improved depth of field effects.

The company is also mentioning the fact that for 1080p TVs, Ratchet & Clank displays a super-sampled 1080p image for better image quality as well as improved depth of field, and HDR (for compatible TVs).

➡ The MUSCLES (rating 9/10)

How is Ratchet and Clank, a 2016 action third-person shooter video game on keypad and mouse? Extraordinary! Easy peasy lemon squeeze. Same thing I felt also with the controller. It’s easier to circle, hop and run around with it, but is more precise to shoot when you use a mouse.

All depends on your gameplay style, but if you think that Ratchet and Clank is hard to play even after you saw the video, just think on the fact that this game is supposed to entertain you, not to give you math problem to solve. Easy. 🙂

➡ The BRAIN (rating 6/10)

Ratchet and Clank tales are coming from a science fiction setting and it follows the adventures of Ratchet, a feline-like humanoid known as a Lombax, who is a mechanic, and Clank (a diminutive, sentient Zoni robot) as they travel through the universe, saving it from evil forces that consistently threaten it. More on this, the series is noted for its inclusion of many exotic, unique and over-the-top weapons and gadgets, a concept that Insomniac Games has also expanded into their other games.

Oooooooook, as far as I know myself, this is not exactly the type of story to empathise with and I gave it 6 points from 10 (the lowest rating today).

Buy or not?

Should you buy this game rated by costin.live with a general 7.(3) points? 🙂

My answer is yes, do it if you have kids, or simply want to have some fun without thinking too much. Until then, just take into consideration that Ratchet and Clank is still free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, but no more than a couple of days. I’m sure PlayStation is already finishing the article on the next month’s free games list. 🙂

Hello, there!

My name is Costin, and I live in Spain. I started this blog because I love sharing good stories from the games I’m playing on PlayStation 4. I will also start writing about life aspects, or digital industry subjects.

On PlayStation 4 I use SoyNikolas and CostinLive as first accounts, but I am playing also with NadaFueUnError and HoldThisBeerMate, just for the fun of their names in spanish and english. 🙂
